EDL Secrets

QUICK EDL SORTING

Description

So, you want to find an easy way to re-sort the EDL, right? Well, look no further than right here. Yes, who wants to look at a boring old Axial manual or the =Help (oh, excuse me, the Power User) Menus when you get it all right here complete with interestingly snide commentary?

Instructions

Here's all you have to do to use QUICK EDL SORTING:
  1. Press WKSP/EDL to make sure that you are in the EDL (with that lovely yellow highlight around it).
  2. Press VIEW + one of the following buttons:
    • REEL to sort by the source reel name/number in ascending timecode
    • ASSEMBLE to sort by the way you made the list, the User Sort
(basically, it is the same thing as sort off).
    • EDIT # to sort by the edit number (duh).

That's it. Quick and painless, just like that job you had last week. Oh well, maybe not as easy as that, but you know what I mean.

CHANGING DROP/NON-DROP FRAME STATUS

Description

I know, it happens all the time. You just can't trust those offline editors to think about things like whether or not an EDL should be in Drop Frame or Non-Drop Frame timecode. What a pain in the neck it is to have to take it to some other room, open it up in some EDL optimization program, stick it back on the disk and then re-load it into your Axial session.

Well, you will be happy to know that I have a quick way to chage timecode types right in the EDL. It doesn't matter which way you are going (i.e. from non-drop to drop frame or vice versa), these instructions work both ways. However, if you are looking for something to actually convert between the two timecode types, this is NOT the way.

Instructions

Here's all you have to do to CHANGE THE DROP/NON-DROP FRAME TIMECODE STATUS in the EDL:
  1. Load the EDL into any list on the Axial.

  2. Change the reel name of the current Master in the workspace by pressing the MSTR button and then REEL.

It is important that the master reel name in the EDL is NOT the same as the one in the workspace for this to work correctly.

  3. Press WKSP/EDL to make sure that you are in the EDL (with that lovely yellow highlight around it).
  4. Press SORT, then REC IN in the User Menu to sort the EDL by record in timecode numbers.
  5. Write down the earliest record in timecode number.
  6. Type the number zero on the keypad.
  7. Press SLIDE to move record in time of the EDL to zero. This makes sure there is not any difficulty with the interpretation between drop and non-drop frame timecode numbers.
  8. Make sure that the master is indeed reading the correct timecode type (drop or non-drop frame). This can be done by inserting a tape and playing it a bit so that the Axial automatically senses the proper type.
  9. Press ALL to highlight the entire EDL.
  10. Press CONTROL + R-MARK.
  11. Type the earliest timecode number that you noted a few steps ago.
  12. Press SLIDE to bring the numbers back up to the proper record in time.
Voila! The Axial looks at the recorder currently assigned in the workspace, sees both what the reel name is and what timecode it has (drop or non-drop frame) and changes both to match that of the currently assigned recorder.

There, isn't that a whole lot easier than the old way?
