Secrets of the
Graphical Timeline

EXCHANGING EDITS

Description

While this is a well documented feature, who reads the manuals? And, who goes in and actually uses the Graphical Timeline?? You should, that's who.

One of the best features of the GT is the way you can extremely easily exchange two edits, either with the edit duration and effect (cut, dissolve, wipe, etc.) or without. Now, to make it a little more interesting, I am offering to pay you a million dollars if they can do this in the text list faster than I can in the GT. (As if I actually have a million dollars after leaving editing and working for a manufacturer for 3 years!)

Note: you must have an EDL in the Axial list to use this feature. You can either make one from scratch or import one via the List I/O feature.

Instructions

Here's all you have to do to EXCHANGE EDITS IN THE GT:
  1. Press the GT/TEXT button so that the EDL display changes to the Graphical Timeline.
  2. Highlight one of the 2 edits you wish to exchange.
  3. Press the XCHNGE button (not the device exchange button, mind you, the correct one is located next to SLIDE).
  4. Highlight the 2nd edit you wish to exchange.
  5. Press ENTER.
That's it. Instantly all the edit information is swapped between the 2 edits. If you care to check, press the GT/TEXT button to go back and verify that all is what you expected.

Note: you will get different results if you are in RED mode or BLUE mode. This refers to the 2 very different operational modes of the Graphical Timeline and is reflected by the color of the cursor in the GT. In RED (or ripple) mode, when you exchange 2 edits the entire edit duration and effect (cut, dissolve, wipe, etc.) are exchanged along with the source. In BLUE mode, only the sources are exchanged.

To change modes, press the REC/SRC button above the trackball. For more information on these two modes, please consult the Axial online help menus or the operations guides.

CHANGING EFFECT TYPES

Description

So you still don't see a real use for the Graphical Timeline, do ya?

Well, how's about a way to change the type of effect the edit is with only 2 keystrokes? Think about it. In the regular text edl, you have to recall the edit, highlight the effect line (cut, dissolve, wipe, etc.), press CHANGE + the new effect and then replace the edit in the EDL. Man, oh man, can I save you some keystrokes!

Note: you must have an EDL in the Axial list to use this feature. You can either make one from scratch or import one via the List I/O feature.

Instructions

Here's all you have to do to CHANGE EFFECT TYPES IN THE GT:
  1. Highlight an edit you wish to change.
  2. Press CHANGE + the desired new effect type (cut, dissolve, wipe, roll or layer).
I told you it was only 2 keystrokes. Nice, huh?

It is a very useful way to change a bunch of edits very quickly. One idea in building quick edits is using the Axial's auto-cut feature so you can mark in and out on a tape and without pressing CUT, you simply press INSERT to add the edit to the EDL. This way you can add many edits very fast while checking out a tape and then go back and change them to dissolves or wipes afterwards.
