Secrets of Triggers

HIDE OR SHOW SPEED TRIGGERS

Description

Do you use speed triggers? Do you have edits with 3, 4 or more speed triggers in them? Have you been wondering if there is a way to not show all those darned triggers in the EDL or workspace?

Well, wonder no more, for you have turned to the Axial Secrets and Lies fountain of knowledge to help guide you toward Nirvanna (no, not the overplayed rock group). Ok, ok, I'm getting to the point, just relax.

Instructions

Here's all you have to do to HIDE OR SHOW SPEED TRIGGERS:
  1. Press VIEW + SPEED TRIGGER.
That's it. Simple enough? This works as a toggle so that if the triggers were visible, they will be hidden and vice versa. And this works in the workspace or the EDL, too.

What's that? You wish you could do that with other types of triggers, too. Well, that sounds like another Secret or Lie to me.

RECALLING TRIGGERS FROM THE EDL

Description

Ever wonder why you are sitting here reading this. . .oh, sorry.

Ever wonder how you could recall a bunch or even a single trigger from an edit you made earlier? Well, stop, read, and learn, 'cause I'm a gonna tell ya how.

Instructions

Here's all you have to do to RECALL TRIGGERS FROM THE EDL:
  1. Setup an edit in the workspace.
  2. Press CONTROL + RECALL to initiate the trigger recall process.

  3. (Sounds like something from a Shuttle mission, huh?)
  4. Highlight the edit and/or trigger you wish to recall.
Now, there are several ways to do this which depends on whether you want to recall just a single trigger or groups of triggers at once.

For a single trigger, do the following:

  • Press ENTER to recall the trigger you are highlited on from the EDL to the workspace.
  • The little yellow highlight stays active in the EDL just in case you want to trackball to another edit and recall a trigger from there, too.

For groups of triggers, do the following:
  • Press the button corresponding to the type of trigger you want to recall.
    • Press SPEED TRIGGER to recall all the speed triggers from the highlited edit.
    • Press D CMD to recall all the device command triggers from the highlited edit. Device commands are stuff like, switcher transition triggers, e-mem recalls, etc . . .
    • Press GPI to recall all the GPI triggers from the highlited edit.

    •
Just like with indidivual triggers above, the little yellow highlight stays active in the EDL just in case you want to trackball to another edit and recall triggers from there, too.

Awww, isn't that nice?

CHANGING TRIGGERS TO PRIOR RELATIVE

Description

Looking for a nifty way to setup triggers so that when you trim one all the others will automatically trim also?

It's easy with Prior Triggers. Read on . . .

Instructions

Here's all you have to do to CHANGE TRIGGERS TO PRIOR RELATIVE:
  1. Setup an edit in the workspace.
  2. Add several triggers of your choice to the edit.
For this example, might I suggest using video switcher auto-transition triggers?
  3. Trim the triggers by whatever amount you wish so that the point at which they will be sent is staggered.
For example, the first one happens at ENTRY +10, the second one at ENTRY +20, the third one at ENTRY +1.00, etc.
  4. Highlight all the triggers EXCEPT the first one.
  5. Press CHANGE, SET/TRIM DUR.
This changes all the highlighted triggers to what is called Prior Relativity. Each trigger was not changed as far as WHEN it will be occurring, just HOW it is displayed and adjusted in the workspace.

You can tell this by looking at the Record Timeline side of the workspace (the far right side of each trigger line with the recorder's timecode numbers, you can trackball over to it). There you can tell that the trigger will still be occurring at the same recorder timecode number, but the way it is displayed to you is now based on the PRIOR line. In this case the prior line is the trigger above. The triggers no longer read as ENTRY +10, but are now PRIOR +10, for example.

Using Prior Relative triggers means that you can now trim the first trigger in the edit (which still should read as ENTRY +10) and all the triggers displayed as PRIOR will move by the same amount. You won't see the PRIOR amount move, only the recorder timeline #s on the right side of each trigger line.

This is kinda hard to explain, but once you follow the steps above and play with it a few times, it will make more sense, promise.

Oh yeah, if you need to change them back to ENTRY relative, simply follow these steps:

  1. Highlight the triggers you wish to change back to entry relative (ENTRY +).
  2. Press CHANGE, SET/TRIM IN.
As usual, if you have any questions, you might try consulting the Axial Online Help Menu or the Axial Operations Manuals. Have fun!
