Workspace Secrets

VIEWING OPTIONS

Description

Want to know how to change the look of the workspace? No, I'm not talking about colors or window sizes! But, you can change the view of the workspace like the EDL so that you can view the duration of each line, the record relative amount (R + or -) or the usual record in-point.

Instructions

Here's all you have to do to use the workspace VIEWING OPTIONS:
  1. Press WKSP/EDL to make sure that you are in the workspace (with that lovely yellow highlight around it).
  2. Press VIEW + one of the following buttons:
    • SET/TRIM IN to toggle the workspace view so that either the Rec In times or the Rec Relative (+ or -) amounts are visible.
    • SET/TRIM OUT to toggle the workspace view so that the Rec Out times are visible.
    • SET/TRIM DUR to toggle the workspace view so that the Rec durations are visible.
That's it, just a few easy-to-remember (yeah, right!) keystrokes. All this is available through the Workspace User Menu (while in the workspace, press VIEW + WKSP/EDL to bring up the menu). I think it is a bit easier to do it this way.

And, of course, everyone should do it my way. (Just kidding ! ! )

Marking In on a Trigger Line

Description

This sounds easy, right? Well, it may sound funny, odd or strange, but if you knew me, then you know that this is the way I talk most of the time. ANYWAY, This is actually a very cool feature on the Axial that I don't think many know about.

Now, be advised that this doesn't work for all triggers. If the trigger is a video switcher auto-trans trigger, then the following procedure will not work. This should become evident as you work through the keystrokes below, honest.

Instructions

Here's all you have to do to MARK IN ON A TRIGGER LINE:
  1. Add a trigger to the workspace edit.

You must have an edit in the workspace (i.e. a CUT or DISSOLVE or WIPE). And, don't forget what I said above: this will NOT work with video switcher auto-trans triggers. So you might want to use a GPI or speed trigger (hint, hint!).

  2. Position the source used in the edit to the point where you would like the trigger to occur.
  3. Highlight the trigger in the workspace.
  4. Press MARK IN.
  5. The trigger in point will now change from ENTRY +0.00 to the actual timecode number from the source machine when you pressed MARK IN above. Does that make sense?

This means that the trigger is now SOURCE ABSOLUTE defined. So, the trigger will be sent out precisely as the source machine hits the timecode number listed.

Pretty gosh darn cool, I must admit. Just think of the possibilities, especially with speed triggers!

Oh yeah, one more thing, this same procedure will work when you are on the right side (the Record Timeline side) of the workspace, too. This means that if you trackball over to the right side of a trigger line, the master becomes active and you can position the master recorder as you did the source machine in the steps above for marking a trigger relative to an absolute recorder timecode number. In this manner, the trigger will be sent out when it passes the recorder timecode number shown, not a source timecode number.

    Now, go play.
