Kalypso Excel Labels?

Hi everyone,

Do any of you use an Excel file to create switcher labels? I've made an Excel label worksheet for the 3k, 4k and older Sony but not one for Kalypso. Might any of you have the button measurements for Kalypso and the measurements for the space between the buttons? Better yet, if anyone has an Excel template for Kalypso they'd be willing to email me I would be forever grateful! I don't see Kalypso everyday but will this weekend. Even though it's got the beautiful LED for each row, I'm a nerd and like to have also have clear labeling for both the shifted and unshifted sources in the space provided. And if you saw my handwriting, you would definitely know why I like to TYPE everything. :-)

Thanks in advance!
John

Better late then never, but the spacing for the Kalypso buttons is .75" center to center. I also use Word for making the labels, mainly for labeling macros as opposed to actual buttons. I still use white tape for camera and vtr buttons.

Mike, I know I've forgotten monitor wall labels, when I come in and see one of mine hanging high on the wall (or another obscure monitor). Guilty of my own pet peeve. Though it's one thing if you find one or two, but the whole wall. Give me a break. That's the one thing I like about LED displays, you get a blank slate each show. Also, there's the occasion in baseball where I'll do 2 out of 3 in a series or something and leave it for the next guy. If they want they can remove them. There's a fine line. But it's a pain in the rear to have to devote a half hour of the day to clearing someone else's labels, still store, DVEous etc... I make an attempt to clear all that as a courtesy to the next person. If they need the stills that badly they should save them. Do I forget sometimes, sure. On the mention of monitors and labels, I personally can't stand when trucks don't normal black as a source to monitors. They'll have demods and still stores everywhere, so if you're only using say 70% of the wall it's a visual distraction to see stuff all over the place. I ticked an EIC off who's truck had normaled all sorts of un-needed sources by writing, "black," in every monitor we weren't using. It's one thing if I'm walking into a truck that's dedicated to a show, but that's pretty rare, and most of those trucks are good enough that don't have normaled walls.

Bob, I walked into a truck at the end of baseball and the previous TD had left tape labels on the monitor wall and many labels on the switcher. The EIC said that they removed most of the garbage he left on the wall, but left the switcher alone. When I am done with the truck, I clean my space and reset the switcher to truck normal UNLESS the truck is following a client and they ask me to leave things. I will delete stills and the DVE for the next person. The wall is cleared unless I forget one of my labels.. Duh!!! You know you are in for fun when the truck guys do not have basic cleaning supplies, to clean sticky keycaps, and they don't get anything as the truck sits for a three or four game baseball series. Pet peeve of mine is coming into a truck and finding sticky keys. Especially in M/E 3 A Bus (I can understand e-mems and macros). It's so bad sometimes I replace the keys with my own buttons I've salvaged. I'll tell the EIC they should clean off their buttons with GooGone or something and they tell me that TDs shouldn't put tape on the switcher.

Sahonen, What these guys are nicely adverting is that this is an informitive forum. From your posts in the past, I see you are new here and often divert from the subject. As ytou can see, many of us label differently- some of are old and need the bigger print-haha. Just sit back and learn, no need to comment on every post. No one here is really impressed by what show you have worked or not. As long as the the macro worked like you wanted, it could be a high school game. Oh should also say as long as it pays the same too. haha Hope the arm is healing well. Scott S.

John, I know exactly where you are coming from. In most trucks, I am positioned so that I either can't see the LED displays in M/E-1, or the parallax is so great that the display isn't lined up with the button in several M/Es. I used to print labels, but since my viewing issue was mostly with M/E-3 (where the macro & machine control groups make labeling here impossible), I now rely on the Avery 1/2" diameter round labels. Works great. Now, if I could only find 1/2" diameter labels designed to go through a laser or inkjet printer, I'd be in hog heaven :-) -S

<<<... this guy just wants labels on the actual buttons for "that's what I'm used to" purposes.>>> Not quite ... Avery 1/4" circle labels work pretty well for that. The LEDs were definitely there, but since it can be difficult to see the LED displays in M/E 1, for example, I wanted to create a label strip to align just below the preset rows of M/Es 1 & 2 for the sake of being able to see both the shifted and unshifted sources up there quickly and more clearly. That's it. And from the replies I've gotten, it's not an uncommon request. For those of you who sent your files, thanks very much - I do appreciate it. JH
Even though it's got the beautiful LED for each row, I'm a nerd and like to have also have clear labeling for both the shifted and unshifted sources in the space provided.
So they bought the electronic label displays, this guy just wants labels on the actual buttons for "that's what I'm used to" purposes. I'm just waiting for this day: "Hey EIC, I'm trying to set up my E-Mems but they're not working." "Oh, they didn't buy E-Mems with this switcher." "...I see..." "And you can only use the leftmost 20 crosspoints, they didn't buy the option for the right side of the crosspoint panel." "Why does this always happen to me?" "Whoa, buddy, it's down the street, not across the railroad tracks."

John, YGM. It's a Word file, using tables for the cells, rather than an Excel file. I've always been a huge fan of Word for things like this. I find that I have much more control over text size, aspect, kerning, etc., in Word than I do in Excel. Enjoy! -Steve

Dave, I can't remember where or what I was doing BUT I did run into a truck without the displays. At first I thought they were all burned out, but the EIC said that they did not buy them. John, my writing sucks as well. I still use tape and Sharpies because some panels are at weird angles, for me.

Did some intrepid truck owner actually purchase a Kalypso without the label displays?? I knew things were getting tight in this industry, but this takes the cake! Maybe the buttons will be optional next and we'll be required to fork out for a special gadget to poke through a hole in order to elect the desired source?! When you consider the relative cost of a complete system, I struggle to understand why buyers can't find the extra pittance to flesh out their systems with Chroma Keyers and Double Take. Transform cards and m/e cards I can understand (although I don't have to like it). Sorry (to paraphrase a comedian turned sportscaster turned comedian), but i appear to be getting off on a rant!
