Hi all...

Here's one from a long time ago that I was told was a bug in the software of the old 300. It cost me a gig with a regular client as I had a problem with it on one show. The client chose to go to another TD to duplicate the problem the next day (which he couldn't) and so I got boned by that mobile company for about 2 years.

Anyhow, here's the scoop... drag out your dusty memory banks on this one....

Doing hockey on a 300. Had M/E 3 Key 1 as Chy 1. Key A as Chy 2. I was flying my replays in on PP Key A and telestrator on DSK. I programmed two emems on the master for tele on and tele off just in case it died. When I programmed this, I changed the key source for DSK on the "tele off" emem from telestrator to Chy 1.

At the time of programming the master emem, depending on what I had selected for the source for Key 1 on M/E 3, a recall of my tele on and tele off emem changed the hole cut source for Key 1 on M/E 3. For example, if I had Chy 2 selected on Key 1 source on M/E 3 when I programmed the master emems, if I did the recall, it would change the hole cut source on M/E 3 to Chy 1. It would do the exact opposite if I had Chy 1 selected on M/E 3, it would change the hole cut to Chy 2 ON AIR! Note, the crosspoint for Key 1 on M/E 3 stayed lit with the correct fill source. Just the hole cut source changed behind the scenes.

The EIC in the truck I was in was obviously totally unaware as to what the problem was (even though I was able to duplicate it 100% consistently) yet an EIC on one NMT truck told me that this was a known software bug in the 300. At this point in time, the 300 had been discontinued so there were no new software updates available.

I'm just curious if anyone else ever came across this "bug" in the old 300.

Jersey Joe... is he still alive or have him and their Chyron guy (Katz?) killed each other yet?[/quote] Katz is long gone, not sure what he is doing other then some minor college basketball and that was years back when I saw him. As for Joe, he is still working , however two years back he lost an eye. That slowed him down a bit but he still is feisty. He still does a majority of the Devils games. I think Joe and one of our tape guys covered Lincoln's funeral together...

Geez, I read the stuff about timing and I had to laugh... I did the game 6 pre/postgame show of the last Stanley Cup finals in Calgary a couple of years ago in one of Dome's small analog trucks. When the tape guys called in and reminded me we had to phase machines, I froze for a good 20-30 seconds. It was a total blank. I work f/t in a digital plant as a news director and only TD sports maybe 15-20 times/year mostly on 3&4k & Kalypso & Sony systems so I had basically eradicated timing from my brain. Took me a while to remember what the heck to do with the scope too! John Phillips

Guys, timing still can bite you even in a HD world. If say your CG, whatever the box is, is near the edge one way and the cameras are near the edge the opposite direction, you can have an issue. Yes, making sure levels in a DVE are correct has lessened, however we still have issues with levels IF the bug or rental CG is analog and you are bringing it into a SDI world. What is real fun is having a HD switcher and a rental CG and not being able to key one channel of CG because the timing is off and the engineers HAVE NEVER needed to check the truck's timing before. Thank the gods that they were able to get someone on the phone who knew what to do and that we had a set day. The CG was a 4x3 box being upconverted, using truck converters, but the CG and converters were at opposite ends of the reference. Now I can laugh, at the time it was ugly.

I totally agree with Jeremy... in my first year of freelancing I had some shows on a 300 and some others on a 250 and they were far more of a pain in the ass than shows I had on 3K/4K's. Now, part of that is due to the help I got from a couple of geniuses at an unnamed cable news network (thanks Bill and Curt) where they had a couple of 3Ks, but even now, at a point where I sort of know what I'm doing, if I walked into a truck and saw a 300, I would prepare myself for a day of pain. There was just something about all the equipment talking, that even in those early days for me, made it seem like everything was going to be easier. And the timing stuff too... man, I'm so new I barely know what timing is, even now, probably less than Jeremy, cuz I get the feeling you're sort of joking about that. That was always the point where the EIC walked in and said "oh, your timing on the DVEous is off" and I spent the next half hour trying to get bars thru the DVEous to match switcher bars (thanks tdhelp.com). Ok i'm going to try to wipe that stuff from my memory now. Somebody get me a drink.

Hey Dave, I guess I'm just lazy and enjoy the "automation" of the modern world. Not having to manually punch Aux buses....I'm sorry, what's timing again?? haha And only 1 DSK???? I'm on a Kalypso for 3 days, and almost forget how to switch with only 2 keyers per ME. And no Tom, I haven't forgotten the 1680...I choose not to remember that place. Drop me an email

Hi John, I have run into the same problem that you described on more than one GVG 300. I was also told that it was a bug. Not sure if this is the case or not. Bob would certainly be the expert on that question. The problem only exhibited itself on the title keyer (as you described) whenever you would recall an effect on the master emem section, even if, as was always the case, ME3 was not part of that master emem. The only work around I ever found was to never fly into or out of a replay with the title keyer hot on me3. Once I ran the replay off I would select any other key source in the title keyer row and then reselect font one. It would reset the hole cutter to the appropriate selection. I could then use that keyer without worry. I just had to remember to toggle the key selector every time I recalled a master emem. I would see this happen on 300 that I had run for years without a problem, suddenly it would have the problem. It's unfortunate that the truck company chose to blame you for the problem. It is very rare to ever find anyone at a truck company that knows more about the equipment that the people that operate it every day. Iwas fortunate in my case that the EIC at the Compaq Center was a former TD who knew a ton about the 300. He trusted my assessment of the problem and I didn't lose any work over it. Happy punching, Scott

I always thought it would be harder to start in the era of 4ks and Kalypsos. Starting with the limited set of possibilities on the 1680 or 300 gave me more breathing room to figure out what was going on around me so that I could learn to anticipate my directors barkings. Do newer TDs find that with all the bells and whistles (and expectations of employing said donkey kong [who am i quoting?]) it is harder to assimilate the environment in the control room?

As I recall, the 300's had a toggle switch on the Personality Module...in one position, key memory was locked to source selection; in the other position the key memory was overridden by the e-mems. You may have been the victim of the wrong switch position, and if the switch was in the other position on another truck, this would explain why the other TD couldn't recreate it.

Hey John.... Known bug. I'm curious how long the EIC has had this switcher. If it's been longer than a couple of years (I'm being generous here), he would have known about it (and other 'anomolies' of the 300). >"Had M/E 3 Key 1 as Chy 1. Key A as Chy 2."< I will assume chy 2 used the "video keyer" as key A is a source choice for the title keyer, which is probably what you're referring to as key 1. >"I was flying my replays in on PP Key A and telestrator on DSK"< Not sure I follow this...300 has only 1 DSK, and key A is same as above. I don't *believe* this functionality was changed with the (very rare) enhanced key system that was introduced to the 300 very late in it's life. Two workarounds come to mind. Build master emems first (or rebuild m/e-3)... for rebuild...recall m/e-3 emem...select any other key for key 1, then re-select your chosen source, in this case chy 1...re-learn emem (keyer does not need to be on for this). This will reset the the keyer logic and will be fine for the duration of the show....unless you learn a new master emem. As you are correct that it has been a few years since I ran the 300....the second workaround.... I seem to remember being able to avoid this issue by selecting the title key as the (fader bar) transition on m/e-3 while building master emems, and not having this problem. That may not be the fix... it may be one of the *unused* buttons near master emem that also caused some issues when engaged) and unfortunately, I'll probably never remember exactly what I did....until I sit down at a 300 again. (after a few thousand shows, your hands just go where they need to) :) Oh, by the way, any word on your replacement?...because if s/he doesn't know about this either... and apparently doesn't...it's only a matter of time before s/he gets 'bit'...300's don't miraculously cure themselves of this once it shows up.
