my company is considering replacing our present kalypso switcher with a kayak in order to enter the hd realm. Cost is a consideration when upgrading the kalypso frame from classic to the hd frame vs. getting an entire kayak pkg (3me). Any enlightenment to share? Pros and cons? thanks

I can't really say definitively since I don't know what kind of shows you're cutting on it, and I don't know the price of either solution, but I'd have to say the Kalypso should get a strong preference. Your operators already know the Kalypso, and IMHO the Kalypso menu's a lot friendlier than the Kayak's somewhat inconsistent panel menu+sidepanel solution. I think the effects might even transfer over from the old switcher so you don't have to rebuild anything. The Kayak offers better external DVE integration, though, which is a huge factor if you do a lot of DVE wipes. Other than that, I'd say in terms of actually using the thing, the Kalypso wins. Plus, you get another M/E with the Kalypso. Who doesn't like having 33% more M/Es?
