I know this is going to seem like an odd question, but I have a production that requires the signal output to be in 16x9. It is not going to be a HD production, but the cameras can be put into the 16x9 aspect, so the director wants the Kalypso to process and output in the same aspect.

Can anyone give me some insight on how to set this up???

Thanks,
John

Thanks Bob, I understand now. This information was very helpful and should make the producer & Director happy.

You won't see a change out of the switcher - switchers don't create 4x3 or 16x9...only the sources (such as cameras, CG's, or VTR's) actually create the aspect ratio change. The switcher will always pass the source video - you won't ever see a change from the switcher...it's a passive device in this respect. But by putting the monitors in 16x9, having all of your sources work in 16x9, and putting the switcher into 16x9, you'll get the effect that you are looking for. Try this: Put your PGM monitor into 4x3 and select 4x3 on the switcher. Do a non-aspected circle wipe between black & color background (or any 2 sources). Note how the circle looks OK. Switch the switcher to 16x9 - note how the wipe is oblong. Next, leave the switcher in 16x9 & put the monitor into 16x9. Note how the wipe is now a circle again. Then put the switcher into 4x3 - see how the wipe goes oblong in the opposite direction. So the switcher wipe aspect will change, but your source images don't. Now, if you put your PGM monitor into 16x9 & switch between 4x3 & 16x9 on your cameras, you will see a dramatic difference...but the switcher will not show a difference.

Thanks Bob, I tried this, I did not see a change when I switched over to 16x9 on the program output. Would I see any drastic change?

In the Suite Prefs / Video Settings, you can set the Kalypso's aspect ratio for either 16x9 or 4x3. Changing this setting does 3 things: (1) it changes the aspect of the wipes and (2) it changes the numeric system of the Transform Engines from 8x6 (in 4x3 mode) to 32x18 (in 16x9 mode), and (3) it changes the width of any still store images that are grabbed to be either 4x3 or 16x9. Note that TE effects built in one mode don't transpose well when played back in the other mode, and the same is true with stills - they'll look either stretched or squashed. Other than that, the Kalypso doesn't know the difference between a 16x9 source & a 4x3 source that's coming in to it...in standard def, each format has the same number of lines & pixels...it's just the shape of the pixel that changes. The only thing that you'll need to change to get a 16x9 output (other than the menu I mentioned) is the format of your PGM monitor.
