I am currently in the process of trying to get our remote switcher, an XtenDD HD switcher, to communicate with an Avid Thunder SD/HD through the GPO's on the switcher. We are trying to use the thunder as our source for replay wipes as well as hopefully a variety of promo videos and other clips during our live sports broadcasts.

I was wondering if anyone has done anything similar and would have any advice in trying to get these two devices working together. We have someone from Avid coming in a the beginning of the year, but I would like to get as much set up as possible before the trainer arrives.

Thanks

Ryan

Yea, I work in Nebraska for the PBS station. We have an HD expando and we were doing a CCHA hockey game (UNO v. Bowling Green). It went pretty well. We are still trying to figure out the best way to run everything with the Thunder and who in the truck should run it. At this point we are using it for our replay move and soundbyte playback.
I would say it takes about 2 seconds to load and cue the file to play. Tomorrow will be the first remote where we use the Thunder for all replays, play clips and other transitions. We will see what I missed setting this up.
That seems pretty good, the SD takes about 4 seconds. Are you in a truck or control room, and you are in Nebraska? doing this event.. Let us know how it goes Bill
Yea, thanks for the help. We have been able to get our P-Bus working and talking with our Thunder HD unit. Now I'm in the process of figuring out what the producers want from the box and the best way to get it work. The one thing that had us confused was the rs422 wasn't called the same thing on the Thunder as it was on the switcher, so we thought they weren't compatible when it fact they were. Once we got past that step it became easier. Thanks for the replies, Ryan D.
If you find yourself using the Thunder with sequences, playing out clips and or stills as show elements, rather then transition elements, check out X-keys.com They have panels that you can save keyboard macros into for easy use as if you were using the keyboard and mouse. There are other threads about this in the TD forum if that is a way you may use it. Curious if the HD thunder calls up clips any quicker then the SD Bill

Allo Christophe, how is it going? Thank you for posting the link. Hello Ryan, Christophe is correct. Using an Rs422 protocol like Odetics or VDCP gives you direct control of the clip selection. Give it a try and then decide whether this or P-Bus works better for you. regards Rolf

Hello Ryan, I'm pretty sure Thunder can be also controlled by RS422 port with VDCP or Odetics protcols. XtenHD handles both of them. The good point of those controls is you can import the clip list in the switcher menu. Then you can load (at the server speed ;-) ) the clip from the switcher. You can read this user note about machine control (it works in the same way for DD35, XtenDD, XtenHD, KayakDD and KayakHD) : Regards Christophe

Have someone wire you a P-bus cable to Thunder (only one is needed). In the Thunder there are menu's to setup up P-bus, comm port etc. It is also in the manual. The Thunder allows you to save show config/pbus files. So each show can use he same effect # to call up different clips/stills. In the XtenDD you will need to setup P-bus address and triggers for each Thunder channel. As was mentioned thunder clip recall is slowwwww.. I used it in a pinch with a 4K via P-bus, and it was very unreliable for triggering and timing with undercuts. You need a lot of time between effects so the timing works all the time. good luck Bill

Hi Arc, The last shop I worked at had Pinnicle (Avid's) Thunder in use with a DD35 (the older version of the XtenDD). We used it via the Pbus connection and this seemed to work okay for us. However, it takes thunder about 4 seconds to cue a clip, so be aware of that.. As far as specific questions on configuration, you might wanna call your Thompson rep, or your Avid rep and have them give you some more step by step instructions tailored to your specific shop. Good luck! Scotty A.
