Hello All:

I was wondering how stations are getting video from computers, such as websites etc.... on-the air.

Our news dept. wants to be able to interact with websites live. The problem we are having is our VGA/NTSC converter [i believe cost around $1500] does not seem to be doing a good job. Even large text and graphics look blurry/pixelated etc.... We have touchscreen/screenwriter technology that allows the anchor to interact with the website via a touchscreen or a plasma monitor....but the output of the computer is not acceptable for use either in the plasma or taken "fullscreen."

Any ideas / suggestions / settings (resolutions) / specific pieces of equipment / converters / video cards etc.... would be greatly appreciated.

We're trying to pull-off the "cnn" type look where they go to an anchor standing in front of a plasma and he interacts with some topical websites / guiding viewers where to click etc.... Their video looks good so I am assuming we are using the wrong equipment or have a wrong setting somewhere.

[we are still an analog shop]

Thanks,

Clint

Clint, in the past I have used units from Folsom Research, I think the VFC-2100, with good results. Both of those facilities were analog as well. Another option is to try Mike's suggestion. Try another graphics card, that has S-VHS out, and see if that works.

Curt, Thanks for the thoughts. We actually have the ScreenWriter software also....the main thing we are trying to achieve is being able to control a website live on-air. As far as I know - the ScreenWriter itself does not do this, unless there is an add-on that we are not aware of. The ScreenWriter output itself looks fine, coming from the application through the installed broadcast [i forget the manuf.] video cards. The problem comes when we try to output a website. The broadcast video card seems to be directly tied into the ScreenWriter software and will only output graphics/video from that application. We can't output the desktop or internet explorer etc.... We are currently using another computer to run internet explorer on and using a scan converter to convert the VGA to NTSC....this is where we are having the problem. The quality seems to be quite more acceptable by lowering the resolution to 800x600.....but text can still be difficult to read sometimes. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good products/converters that they are using to achieve this. Thanks for all the thoughts/info! -Clint

We have a screenwriter at MSNBC also. If I remember correctly, it has an SDI out ( and in). We take SDI out, and convert it to RGB locally on the plasma., then the SDI signal loops out of the converter, and continues on to get it in to the house router etc. I know you said you are an analog shop, but what outputs are on your screenwriter? If you have SDI or something higher than composite/analog, you could you convert it locally at the monitor, and feed the monitor direct....then take that feed into the rest of your plant. I realize this doesn't help you for your entire plant, but if it looks good in the monitor, you may not need to take if full ( alteast in this scenario) hope this helps. Curt

I use my laptop all the time on the air. Things you can try to make the text look better: Set the video output on the computer to the lowest resolution or 800x600 so the text is larger. On internet explorer, there is a zoom dropdown on the bottom right corner of the status bar (you need to have the status bar visible in the "tools" menu). Play around with the zoom. This works as long as there isn't any flash or java applets embedded in the page. (ctrl + and ctrl - are zoom shortcuts) I don't use a scan converter, I just use a $14.00 cable to output my laptop via s-video.
