Playing Avid AirSpeeds from Sony 8000G?

Anyone have experience playing Avid AirSpeeds from a Sony 8000G?

Complicating our issue is that we have Avid ControlAir (software) that talks to the AirSpeeds - so the switcher does not talk directly to the AirSpeeds.

We are doing this on our Kalypso now using some extra devices that take the serial command from the Kalypso machine control and turns it into a button press that Control Air understands.

In a perfect world, we'd like to be able to preset any of our 4 AirSpeed channels, then use one of the 3 buttons on the Sony under the fader bar to play the AirSpeed channel. This is what we are used to on our Kalypso (we are moving to the Sony 8000G in June....it has just been installed and we are starting to play with it).

We're not sure if we should be trying to do this with GPIs....our test of this seemed to indicate that GPIs needed to run as a timeline, but were worried if a timeline effect had to run every time we rolled a server channel that it would interfere with any other timeline effects we had called up to do our show effects.

We do have the Device Control module, but this doesn't seem to be an option for us due to fact that the Control Air software is technically controlling the AirSpeeds via ethernet.

Yes, we are a news station. Any help/suggestions/info anyone could provide is much appreciated.

We use Countdown here and it really simple to setup as long as you have the optional GPI cards installed on the Countdown PC. The way its done is you connect the GPI triggers from the switcher to the countdown, then the Countdown controls the AirSpeeds by VDCP. The reason you would do this because you can setup playlists and you only need 5 GPI test fires per channel for full control (Play, Recue, Eject, Step up through the playlist, Step down through the playlist). I have had a look at the ControlAir manual and there doesn't seem to be an option to install GPI input cards to control the ControlAir workstation. I'm no expert in this field so its probably best to contact Avid directly.

GPI would be the easiest if the airspeed accepts them. You could have a GPI timeline recalled via a macro that would not interfer with any other timelines. Rewind action would fire the GPI. Maybe easier would be to assign one of the pref buttons (or 3 of them) to fire a test GPI command. This would do same as a timeline without even doing a timeline. Then in a macro you would assign that prefs buttons in the macro. In regards to the 3 buttons near the fader bar I think you can only assign one of them as a macro replace. The play/stop commands are used with serial machine control. You may want to just make a few macros and attach to the keyer row above the source for that 'machine' key 1 row could preset, key 2 row could roll it for you. May be easier to get to those buttons rather then those under the fader bar that are under that stupid plastic cap which I think is suppose to 'protect' you from hitting those buttons.
