I just came from a Kayanne session with Grass Valley. The Kayanne is very user friendly and very Kalypso like as far as it's menu structure. In other words you'll be able to adapt pretty easily from what I saw. There are plenty of new features that will amaze you, make you smile and make your life easier, but as is with any new switcher, you'll have to start from scratch and go from there. When I first learned the Kalypso I was instructed to just treat it like a 3 or 4K. From there I expanded on the key features that made the switcher what it is incorporating the new features at the time. In my opinion you will have to do that with the Kayanne. One of the things that makes the switcher is that you can assign any "Stripe" (or M/E) to any part of the switcher therefore expanding the different levels and shift levels thus making it easier to switch your show without have to crawl all over the real estate. Everything is literally at your fingertips. Everything I read about the switcher was very familar to me when it was demonstated and you should have no problems getting up to speed if you already know the Kalypso. The only thing I see is getting used to what buttons are where and how to incorporate some of the new features that will make your life easier, but that will come with time. One of the features that is nice was the adding or subtracting of any other delegated element you might want to include into into an existing timeline without having to build it again! Plus you can offset that elements start time without having to build in a dummy KFs so there is much more flexibility. The programable ME clean feed assignment is exactly the same as the Kalypso. It's very easy to assign clean feeds and even replace sources by assigning what source has what key which you can preview as you select. Its all very nice and if it works as demonstrated there will be a lot of advantages. We were told that it is not their intention to take business away from Lance or DNF and their controller is a $9,000 option. We didn't have a chance (because of time) to inquire more about this or to ask some other questions which became inquiries after we left, but the GV Roadshow was comforting and educational and it put to rest some of the fears that were questions. In other words, GV listened to TD's/operators and it shows.
Who is the lucky TD on that show? It might be interesting considering how Fox has downsized their MLB travel crews. I have heard that they have even eliminated the travel TM. Depending on how both of those teams are playing, Fox just might change games. Both teams are below .500 now.
Hi Mike: Right now the game is still on the schedule for August 1st with 25HDX. I have my MLB schedule through July 1st but that is it. The last two games at Tropicana were done my yours truly, but production has not been assigned for that particular weekend so who knows. As for the TM ... FOX has limited some of the traveling and are using only "some" local Tech Producers in certain cites. The game scheduled for August 1st has a normal traveling Tech Producer on the show, but your right, that could change by then. Hope all is well. Best, Rick.

At least they have five days to get things straight. (On the truck I mean. I have been the first TD on two trucks and both times we had some interesting days doing regular local shows and not having to worry about dual feeds.) It might be interesting considering how Fox has downsized their MLB travel crews. I have heard that they have even eliminated the travel TM. Depending on how both of those teams are playing, Fox just might change games. Both teams are below .500 now.

I heard that GV is putting together a Kayenne road show, both here in the States as well as overseas. Here in the US it's supposedly going to be something like an 8-city tour. That's all the info that I got about the trip...my suggestion is that those of you who didn't get to see Kayenne at NAB may want to try & find out if it's coming to a city near you.

I was told the manual and menu emulator will be released around the same time the switcher will be released (mid June-ish).
Was there any talk of allowing a laptop to connect to this switcher. Like how the Kalypso allows for multiple menu panels running? And if so does anyone know if it will support a Mac computer?
With a Kayak you can run any Windows machine as the sidepanel, so it would be foolish for them to change that. Since both the Kayak and Kalypso software are written for Windows, I don't see how it can run under OS X. Unless the sidepanel is Java or HTML based, I think OS X user would need to dual boot their machines. BTW, anyone know when a manual will be available to download?

I am sure that I will be corrected if I'm wrong here (which is fine with me), but to quickly answer your questions: The Kayak did not do Double-Take because if the limitations of the DD software, not the hardware of the frame. Because Double-Take is a software-based feature, my understanding is that the Kayenne will be able to do it from the get-go. 60/50p is a hardware / frame-based issue. Because the Kayenne uses the KayakHD frame, if the KayakHD currently can't do it (such as 1080p) then the Kayenne won't either.

I have a couple of Kayenne questions. The first refers to double take, as this is a Kalypso feature and to my knowledge not available on a Kayak is it going to be a working feature on the fist systems and if not does anyone know how long before it is introduced on the Kayenne. The second question is does Kayenne support 60/50P and if not does anyone know when it will. Mandy

John, great comments about the new Kayenne. I am excited for this new product and I am really looking forward to features I've been wanting in a GV product for years! I can't wait to work on one. As far as learning something new I believe that it makes us all better TD's to be challenged once in a while. Especially with a new product that makes us change the way we think about switching live television. Provides us more tools at our disposal.

Hi gang! I haven't been around in a while and I'm glad some of you enjoyed the extremely impromptu UStream video of the TD/EIC-only Kayenne demo at NAB. I really appreciate the GV guys allowing me to document the session for those who couldn't be there but I have to apologize profusely for the poor quality of the video. The bottom line is that I went to the GV guys very late in the day with the idea and had zero time to set up anything in terms of lighting, sound or even an external camera. We literally walked into the room, I fired up my Mac and off we went. Hope you understand. Now, having read some of the posts in this thread I do want to clarify one thing; and I say this with nothing but respect and admiration for my friends and colleagues here, but I know the Kayak. I work on a Kayak for three days out of most every week. The Kayenne is absolutely NOT a Kayak. I would go so far as to say that any professional technical director who knows the Kalypso should absolutely be able to sit down at this switcher and within a few "familiarization" minutes be able to locate everything on the panel that they have grown to love about Kalypso. The layout of the control surface was extremely well thought-out and, in terms of the menu, my opinion is that it's easier to navigate than Kalypso's. The icons of the "Home" screen are ALWAYS there, no matter where you are in the menus. There are some really cool new features that will challenge some of us to re-think the way we build and run our shows, but in my opinion that's the kind of challenge I want. I want a switcher that will do what I need it to do outright and not have to build some crazy work-arounds. I'm looking at you, Partial Keyframing! The truth is that, for the shows that I have been fortunate enough to work on - including auto racing, the NFL, and BCS National Championship games - I would take this switcher as it is TODAY and feel 100% confident that I could - at the very least - mirror my Kalypso shows exactly. And with regard to SONY Rick's comments about the modular panel, I have a credit card-sized piece of plastic in my wallet that says I can organize any of the modules of any panel the way I want it laid out in less time than it took a 7350 to realize I've actually pressed a button. Folks, if I seem jacked up about the Kayenne, it's because I AM. Let me be clear that I am NOT on the Grass Valley payroll by any stretch of the imagination, but I firmly believe that this is what the Kalypso world needs in a next generation switcher. Now, are there some things about it that I would have done differently? Of course! Ask 100 TDs and you'll get 1,000 different opinions. But there are so many things about this switcher which demonstrate to me that GV is indeed listening to US - the operators. And that's all I could ever ask for. -John

I find it amusing, though, the number of features that appear to be copied from Ross' Vision system.
Not to mention how many of Sony's were ripped off..... up until NAB, TGV was constantly saying how much of a hassle and how dangerous having a modular control panel was becuase you'd keep coming into different control panels wherever you worked. Now, I guess it's ok?
The marketing hype that "Kalypso users will find the transition measured in minutes" may be a little overstated - if this is true, then we should all expect training classes to be a half-day scenario.
Bob, thanks very much for stating exactly what I was thinking. Your entire post was very cogent and balanced, but this line in particular stood out for me. When I read that kind of salesman-speak from a Thomson employee, the BS flag instantly goes up in my head. That doesn't instantly mean the Kayenne sucks - I really hope it's a good a product as the NAB feedback says it is - but hype is hype, and the hype that Thomson rolled out when they were pushing the Kayak really proved that salesmen with try to sell any new product from their company, regardless of its actual worth, as the latest and greatest thing ever, just to make a buck. Hopefully, this time around the actual switcher will somewhat live up to the hype. I'm hoping it does. But being a cynic, I'm not holding my breath.
"As I've been letting you folks know for the past few years, the Kayenne (check the previous postings under "Missouri") is just a Kayak with a new panel & menu overlay"- Bob Ennis Just going off a quote from Bob who took part in the design of this switcher.
I will stick by what I have said in the past...the Kayenne frame is a Kayak, which is what it was originally intended to be. That being said, it's not a slam against the Kayenne - far from it. As I've alluded to in the past, the Kayak frame is actually more advanced & more powerful than the Kalypso. While the Kayak has been a huge seller for TGV, if you look at most of the postings here, the problem that the Kayak seems to have is a less-than-ideal user interface because it is based around the DD software. For high-end users, the current Kayak UI is about as well received as I currently am at GV. That less-than-steller acceptance by high-end users was the reason for the original Missouri project (now Kayenne)...take the GV UI that users love & pair it with a frame that costs less to produce & can do more. Judging by the drooling at NAB, the concept seems to be working. From what I understand, the soon-to-be-offered model (XL) is still based around the DD software, but has other features made possible by the new panel and a restyled menu system. Users who understand the DD-mindset will have few issues with the menu facelift...things like Define Memo (now Define E-Mem), multi-transition, and the RAM recorder are based around the frame capabilities. These concepts will be a little foreign to traditional GV-only users, but nothing that's insurmountable. The marketing hype that "Kalypso users will find the transition measured in minutes" may be a little overstated - if this is true, then we should all expect training classes to be a half-day scenario. But when you have new concepts such as Panel-Mems or assigning any bus (or group of buttons) to be something else than their traditional intention, you can expect to hear crys from the same type of users that blasted both SONY & the DD switchers...it's something that the uninitiated may have a hard time getting their head around, and is going to take some time to learn. I'd be willing to bet that the current team worked very hard to try & "blend" the DD operating paradigm into something that will seem at least a little more familiar to Kalypso users than the current Kayak software. How well they succeeded is ultimately up to you the users, & not to the demoers & salesmen. The other UI model (K) is supposed to REALLY look & act like a Kalypso - the software overlay will have to transpose all of the Kalypso interface into something that the Kayak frame can understand. Because of the way that the Kalypso software was originally designed, this may prove to be a more daunting task, and may require more processing power & maybe more memory. But I trust that they'll eventually make it work. So please don't get me wrong when I compare the Kayenne to a Kayak - all I'm trying to say is that if you drop a Ferrarri body on a VW chassis, you still have a VW. That's not to say that the Kayak frame is a "VW" - it's a very powerful platform. I simply suggest that you look through the hype about a "brand new switcher" to realistically judge it for what it is - which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Just an opinion, but why did GV decide to build the new Kayenne in the DD35/KAYAK language when it's been proven that the Kalypso was the prefered switcher on remotes across the country? I only know a handful of traveling TD's who will take a KAYAK show. Just wondering while we're still going down this road....remember, 5 hours to set your show up!
and real machine control. Wow. I wonder if that means you won't need a DVEous or Lance anymore.
I only watched about 20 minutes of the ustream video not sure if it was talked about later, but is there any difference with the machine control on Kayenne then Kalypso? Kalypso always had Amp, odetics, louth protocols. You could do ethernet (K2's) or serial. 8 serial doesn't really sound like a lot, but there is only so many you can squeeze into a small frame, so I understand that. There is a device controller which is great but you could do the same on Kalypso but without the jog knob, nice they added something to make it easier. If you didn't need to do any looping you could have gotten rid of the lance years ago. Problem is you can't do looping. I don't mean the EVS loop that sony has, nice but how many stations have 120K for an EVS. There is no way to do a 3 point loop, or play an active head to another clip and have it continue looping, not even with a Sony/EVS combo. This is why Lance, BUF, and DNF are still making controllers, non of the switchers out there can do the same thing. Nice they support all the protocols out there, as does the Kahuna, Sony does not. So is there anything really different with the Kayenne machine control? Not trying to put it down just want to know if there is anything new besides the controller? thanks

Here's something I just thought up... I noticed a feature that lets you scrub through E-MEM timelines. If you're using Kayenne machine control for your DDR, will that control also jog the DDR appropriately for the position in the timeline that you're currently scrubbing to? That would make timing the under-dissolve so much easier when building DDR transitions.
Personally the way that prefer and that I had proposed (way back when) was to put a keyer on the input source or route an AUX with a keyer on it and avoid the M/E keyer altogether...that way there would never be a conflict.
How about floating keyers? Sacrifice the two "simple" keyers on each M/E being permanent parts of those M/Es and let them float around the switcher. Bonus: Keys on auxes without having to route M/Es.

The Kayenne definitely looked like a sexy panel on a Kayak frame. Initially the panel looks very confusing so it will probably take some time to get used to it. I like the ability to tilt each ME by 7 degrees. I don't like how close the PGM/PST rows are to each other. I can see some mistakes from fat-fingering a source in PST and also hitting PGM. I think the frame on display had a Kayenne door on the front but a Kayak label on the back. I felt sorry for the demonstrator on Wednesday afternoon. He could only give Powerpoint demos all afternoon because the Kayenne crashed and they couldn't get it up and running. Irv
Kayenne already matches Kalypso V15 in almost every respect and exceeds it in many others. John
This insight is extraordinarily exciting for this TD. I think the GV faithful are always prepared to weather some bumps with a new product or version, knowing that the end result is always a progressive yet familiar production tool. To hear that Kayenne seems to be ready for prime time off the blocks, ready to hit the ground doing at least the work of a 15.x Kalypso is great news. I wager that I speak for a lot of TD's, who have been long-concerned that the GV 1600/300/3K/4K lineage might end with Kalypso, when I say bravo!
A decent way to handle this would be to find a "free" keyer on the M/E (in order of preference: Something with SS3/4 in it already, something with black as the source, the keyer with the lowest priority that is not currently turned on), and throw SS3/4 into it temporarily, then blink the auto trans/cut buttons for that keyer to let the operator know that this is happening.
In other words, if you knew 3/4K, you'd have a really good shot at doing a solid show on a Kalypso even if you had never seen one. I think the same would follow here: know Kalypso?...you could very likely get a Kayenne show off the ground with little fuss, even if you hadn't learned all of the new features. Given even a brief orientation training and you'd be golden.
Well, Yes & No. As I've been letting you folks know for the past few years, the Kayenne (check the previous postings under "Missouri") is just a Kayak with a new panel & menu overlay. Two versions were shown at NAB...one was the XL panel, which keeps the basic Kayak menus but "puts lipstick" on them. This version is closer to production because it keeps the current working Kayak menu structure & so the code more closely matches the original Kayak - it is the one that you will hear GV tout that it has more than Kalypso capabilities. The "K" panel (the one that more closely resembles Kalypso in look & feel - especially in the menu) will still require a LOT of software work (& possibly some hardware upgrades) to transpose the Kalypso menu structure to the DD-style structure - I wouldn't look for it too soon. So, as to "ease-of-use" - if you are comfortable with the DD-style of operation that has been present on Kayak, then yes, you should slip right in. If, however, you don't know Kayak-ology, then it'll be tougher, but not impossible. For instance, the "new" partial keyframing and Make-EMem functionality is nothing more than the DD/Kayak's old MakEMEMo; this lets you assign what resources of an M/E are recalled & manipulated on an effect-by-effect or keyframe-by-keyframe basis - the DD's had it for years, and the SONY has a form of it. If you know the DD, then you'll be right at home...if you don't then you'll need some time to wrap your head around the concept of turning M/E resources on & off...certainly not a "traditional" GV approach. The "new & revolutionary" Source Rules which lets you assign keys to sources is just a different incarnation of the Kalypso's original Key Add/Key Drop concept. It was never implemented on Kalypso because the Engineers couldn't figure out how to get around a situation where Source X has Key 1 assigned to it with SS1/2 and Source Y has Key 1 assigned to it with SS3/4...what happens to the keyer when Source X is on-line & you preset Source Y? Perhaps this trap has been addressed in Kayenne, but it wasn't explained during demos (For what it's worth, SONY was also showing this "feature" at their booth, along with Aux Bus Transitions which were also shown on the Kayenne). Don't get me wrong - I am thrilled that the Kayenne finally made an appearance - it appears that most all of the original design team's ideas & concepts were kept intact - Helge Schenk & I can be quite proud that the work that we started in 2003 has finally made it to market - and while we all tend to forget that the Kalypso wasn't "ready for prime time" until after Version 7 software and the Kayenne is in its infancy (altho because the XL panel is running proven Kayak code, it's going to be pretty stable), still I'm looking forward to eventually using one & I could not be more ecstatic for my "alma mater". All that I am saying is that a sexy panel & icons in the menu that may look like those found on Kalypso's menu isn't going to necessarily make a Kalypso user an instant expert on Kayenne - no more so than a Kalypso user moving to a Kayak. Because of the underlying software that is still DD-based, those who know Kayak will be much further along the learning curve than a 4K, Zodiak, or Kalypso user - that is, until the "K" panel/menu comes out.

When MTVG built 23hdx, they had an agreement to swap their Kalypso for a Kayenne when it became available. They may have had other deals for some of their other trucks too. Their are only 4 DPMs per M/E plus the 4 channel eDPM. The Machine control device could replace the lance. Cues are stored by a seperate emem and thus those emems would become your "cueman".

With all the Kalypsos and Kayaks still in the field probably for years to come, I don't think the shows that will take advantage of this switcher will even exist except at the highest levels for at least a few years. And yes, it does appear that Grass is trying to make the Lance unnecessary... Hopefully there's a CueMan equivalent for the Kayenne.

I heard that IMS Productions has ordered one.
Have we heard if anyone has purchased a Kayenne? I have to imagine that it won't be long before we start to see these in the field...
At the Kayenne demo at NAB, a list of a dozen or so customers was on display. I *think* I saw MTVG on the list.

Matt, last year one of the EIC's for MTVG hinted that they would be getting them. Along with some rumors I heard the other day it sounds like FSN might try to do one show for two markets with a box like this. (talking about one production team for two shows.) As for other buyers, I think T/GV would have to show that the switcher is at least as functional as a Kalypso is right now. Back when the Kalypso came out many shows could handle the limitations that the Kalypso had, not now.
I wonder if it will take longer to set up for a show. There is just so much there, and so much customizing you can do, I don't know if I would have time to take advantage of all of it on a single day show. 6 keyers on each ME is awesome, though. Along with 30 DPMs with combiners, and real machine control. Wow. I wonder if that means you won't need a DVEous or Lance anymore.
This is exactly what was presented. eDPM is being presented as a DVEous replacement with a K-Scope combiner feel. Access to your switcher sources, has its own e-mems, and comes back to the switcher on its own crosspoints. The machine control was presented as talking to just about anything, so I'd assume it speaks FF and SpotBox, and I think it also has its own e-mems. GV was big on presenting that these systems have their own e-mems for client portability. Sounds like the return of a client bringing files for DVE and cue effects and the TD being able to integrate them into a base show set-up.

From the demos at NAB, and the material posted online, the system layout and menus seem extraordinarily Kalypso-like. It felt like GV did a great job of preserving their usual shallow generation-to-generation learning curve. Given even a brief orientation training and you'd be golden. ...just my $.02 from what I saw.

From what I saw on the web site it seems like they used the Kayak's still store. Only six outputs. Yes, you can grab a freeze in the keyers, like a Kayak, but I would have liked 10 or 12 still outputs. Or, another concept, have six common still store channels and each ME have say four unique output channels. I wonder who will get the first one? I wonder if anyone will be willing to pay a few hours of OT, so that setting it up will not be a major issue.

I think this is pretty darn exciting. The "Grass Valley" Grass Valley switcher line will not die with Kalypso. What do we all think? Why isn't there more chatter about this?
