The quick FM load time is based on backing up and restoring to a DDR or VTR.  I read a release note that explained it all, looks very cool.  I don't remember reading anything that would improve the firewire load time.  I would imagine that speed will not change.  Unless there was some change to the FM file structure to make them smaller in size, I doubt this will ever change.   The VTR/DDR option seems to be a great way to do it if it works as intended,

Correct... I saw this set up and operating at a Sony lab in December... One of the XDCAM HD disc recorders (can't recall which one) was connected and being used... The load recall from the XDCAM disc recorder took about a minute...

Hello Calle,
the main updates in the sw 8 is, as I have learned from our sony rep, to meet the new 6k-system where you don´t have the touchscreen. So you have some improvements with mouse/screen interface.
Also you have an interesting feature for us who have interaction between the switcher and the router where you know have greater possibility to use the panel as a router panel, and also the menu to get your whole router system in your switcher. I know that is not very useful for you with the system you normally work with though, but for us it´s a great feature.

see you
mh

Carl...
I've learned about a number of enhancements that are coming with Version 8 ... among the most memorable for me are improvements to Frame Memory like more partitions (for a firewire HDD), a "find" feature to search your FMs, background import, PNG import, and a real-time backup and restore functionality.
There are a number of enhancements to Macros, too ... more registers (250, I think), and the ability to run Menu Macros from the favorites menu.
I know there are improvements to MP-II, as well.
Hope that helps,
Matt

Hi,

We just had our two G systems upgraded.
Here are a few things that we really like:
Real time restore and backup of frame memories.
Now it takes less than a minute to load 1030 stills.
Stills can be search by name and clips can be trimmed.
New Stills can be appended to the existents without replacing all when doing transfers from external HD.
Also we have now 250 macros registers and 250 pbus and devices registers that are totally separate from the effects registers.
The macro once is running can be cancelled or recall the same or a new one.
Macros in the timeline have more commands like recall, take and no action.
Transfer form USB or external HD happens in the background.
Menu macro is available on the favorites menu.
There are a few more things that we didn't try yet.

Cheers,

Oterbor,
Curious on the loading of 1030 stills in under a minute.. Are you loading them in from the HDD or do you have an external firewire drive or something?  we just upgraded our software and the load from the HDD seems a little faster, but no way under a minute..

Mike,

Once our stills are loaded into the switcher we are backing them up using an external DDR.
Basically if you have 1030 stills loaded they will become eventually a 35 second clip.
If you have to restore them or just reload another 1030 different stills we use the new feature “restore from DDR/VTR” and it will take the 35 seconds to reload.
This operation can be done using a macro that plays the clip and set the frame memory menu to be ready to restore.

I gave this a shot, too ... I can see the "under a minute" load time working with the DDR/VTR export/import tool that is part of the FM now.  Loading about 900 stills at 1080i from firewire still takes us about 20 minutes.

Matt,
So basically, if i have lets say 70 still loaded into the switcher; and use this vtr export tool, I can export them to an XDCAM tape which would make a  7 second clip??  Then if i had to lets say re-start the entire switcher and lose all my frame memoies, I can import that XDCAM tape with the 7 seconds on it, and in under a minute all my stills will be back up and running??
thats amazing if im understanding it properly.. and will definitely give it a try..

You are correct, Sir!  I did a back-up to one of our Avid AirSpeeds, and it worked like a charm.  Not sure if you remember the old Quantel graphics systems, but this reminds me an awful lot of the old "digital dump" that they used to do.  If you need the documentation on Sony's Version 8 software, let me know ... I have a PDF that I would gladly share with you.

Matt I'd be interested in having a look at the V8 documentation. Are you only able to run the first 100 macros from the FlexiPads? You could assign more to the utility box and macro attach I guess.

What is will work or not work on the 8000A?  I assume the FM stuff and macros should work on both frames.

From what I've read, it looks like the improvement is designed for both the G and A frames.  If you're running ELC, I don't believe this upgrade is compatible.

ELC??? Do you mean the early adopters who bought original 8k's will be stuck again?

I think this is just something unique to version 8 and the ELC (I don't know much about ELC) ... I'm thinking that version 8 is a bridge of sorts, just updating some of the capabilities that we've been asking and hoping for.
